General Information
State and regional groups of disability services professionals
have existed for as long (or longer) than AHEAD/AHSSPE has existed.
These groups vary in the degree of structure and amount of activity
they have, but share a common thread in the desire to ensure full
participation in higher education for people with disabilities.
AHEAD members benefit from the existence of state and regional
groups because they have a "pulse" on the issues of
relevance in specific geographical areas, and they promote networking
and sharing of information about local resources. Because of
this,
AHEAD has sought to develop more formal ties to state and regional
groups, and to support their existence by sharing its resources.
The Regional Affiliate Membership program was established
at the AHEAD conference in Las Vegas in 1998, when the Board of
Directors voted to establish a category of Chapter Affiliate.
This step came about through the persistent hard work of Bill
Pollard, Bruce Pomeroy, and Kip Opperman, and with the input of
Michael Sax, the Membership Committee, and the Executive Council
of AHEAD in New England. Through combined efforts of international
and local organizations, membership will become stronger, the
AHEAD image and message will become more visible, and professional
development opportunities will become more available.
By definition, a Chapter Affiliate shall be a group
of professionals (defined in the Association's Bylaws) actively
working to enhance higher education opportunities for students
with disabilities. The AHEAD Board of Directors must review
changes
to either the mission or by-laws of a state or regional affiliate.
Chapter Affiliates and AHEAD jointly sign an affiliate
agreement that outlines the responsibilities of each party to
the agreement.
The AHEAD Board of Directors encourages existing
and new groups to contact the current U. S. Director, Jean Ashmore,
with inquiries or suggestions about the affiliation process. PH:
713-348-5841, EMAIL: adarice@rice.edu.
