Business Meeting/News

Pamela Starr, CT AHEAD President, called the meeting to order. Pamela opened the meeting with a welcome and thank you to all present

A CT AHEAD membership form was distributed with a request that members complete and submit the form with membership dues. Information on the bottom of the form provides instructions on submission and payment of dues.

Pamela Starr informed the members of the need to elect a Secretary. Pamela acknowledged and expressed many thanks for Carol Young’s outstanding service to CT AHEAD as former Secretary. In the absence of nominations, Barbara Barnwell volunteered to serve as Secretary until August 2005.

Pamela Starr distributed material for the interactive conference scheduled for 2:00 PM today after the business meeting.

Pamela Starr distributed correspondence from Jean Ashmore regarding the concern of AHEAD as to whether the existence of a New England AHEAD affiliate creates direct conflict to the establishing of a CT AHEAD affiliate.

There was much discussion on why CT AHEAD is not a member of New England AHEAD. Pamela Starr said she would send out copies of the CT AHEAD by-laws and continue to investigate this situation. She explained that much clarification is still needed on the matter from National AHEAD and New England Ahead, and the she is scheduled to pursue pertinent clarifications Monday, October 3, 2004 via a conference call Concerns discussed at this meeting included:

  • travel involved with attending New England meetings,
  • the potential for CT AHEAD to lose its cohesiveness on Connecticut issues,
  • whether affiliation with New England requires CT AHEAD to dissolve into the New England Chapter,
  • and whether this group is a recognized entity of AHEAD since all of the rest of the states are combined.

Pamela Starr asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the last CT AHEAD meeting. Minutes accepted.

There was a discussion on the CT AHEAD website. Pamela Starr informed that the website is currently on Southern Connecticut State University’s server.

New Business

Recent community college changes in the role of the Disability Office in certifying students with disabilities for a reduced course load as it relates to insurance were shared. Many present reported no responsibility for this kind of student certification. Due to time constraints, the discussion will continue at the next meeting.

Old Business
