2010 Conference Program Information
AHEAD is delighted to collaborate this year with the Postsecondary Education Programs Network (PEPNet) in bringing you this year’s conference in Denver. AHEAD members who are not familiar with PEPNet should know that it is the resource for anything related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in postsecondary education, training and employment. To learn about their work, visit www.pepnet.org AHEAD welcomes colleagues from PEPNet to join in this year’s unique professional development opportunity. As you’ll see from the session listings, we’re offering a rich, not-to-be-missed educational and networking event. You need to be in Denver in July!
Our Registration packet is filled to the brim with sessions designed specifically for disability service/resource personnel, secondary educators who want to learn more about the college environment, ADA Coordinators, and many more campus professionals. Please invite your colleagues to look this over with you. We know it will be hard to choose, so take some time to sit back with a coffee or hot chocolate and read through this information.
Our preconferences on Monday and Tuesday of the conference offer foundational and advanced workshop-style programs in two-day, one-day and half-day formats. We’ve organized the concurrent sessions along topical tracks. Many people like to follow one thread throughout, while others pick and choose based on need and interest – either way is fine! The Topical Tracks listed in bold text after each description, include:
ADA @ 20 Years - exploring the impact of disability law on our practice.
Assistive Technology - including both hands-on instruction and lecture-style demonstrations.
Best Practices in Disability Services and Higher Education - reflecting exemplary policy development and service delivery.
Diverse Viewpoints - fostering DS professionals’ cultural competencies and the recognition of disability as an aspect of diversity
Emerging Student Populations - best practices in welcoming all students to campus.
Innovations and Outcomes - highlighting exemplary ideas in action.
International Perspectives - the disability experience in countries and cultures other than the US.
New and Newer DS Professionals - foundational information covering all aspects of disability in higher education.
Preparing Students for Careers - focusing on all aspects of transition from college to work.
Transition to College - innovative service delivery, transition policies, and student preparation.
PEPNet - sessions specifically designed by PEPNet
Note our two Poster Sessions and our lunchtime Information Sessions. You don’t need to pre-register for these, but we encourage you to attend these timely presentations. Details about them will be available in the on-site Program Book.
Finally, make sure to attend our Plenary sessions and note that this year we start on Tuesday evening of the conference with an important look at 20 years of the impact of ADA on our field. The Featured Presentations section gives you information about these large-group events.
We look forward to seeing you in Denver in July!
