Responsibilities
SUMMARY
The Assistive Technology Specialist is responsible for facilitating equal access to Pearson VUE’s test delivery. The incumbent will review candidate requests for disability-related testing accommodations that involve adaptive equipment or assistive technology. In addition, the incumbent promotes accessibility awareness and Universal Design through networking, training, and collaboration.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide expert resources for all Assistive Technology related operations
- Evaluate candidate and client requests for Assistive Technology accommodations
- Coordinate access solutions with the accommodations approval and scheduling teams
- Provide guidance to Pearson VUE teams working on accessible test delivery solution Knowledge and understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Develop and coordinate best practices and policy relevant to Assistive Technology and Universal Design in test delivery Problem-solving skills
- Project-manage accommodations requests that involve adaptive equipment or assistive technology including purchasing, distribution and implementation
- Provide guidance to Pearson VUE teams that are responsible for ensuring website accessibility Experience and competence with managing complex projects
- Make recommendations and provide vendor contracts, price quotes, and specifications regarding procurement of up-to-date Assistive Technology hardware and software
- Remain knowledgeable about state and federal laws, as well as legal decisions related to Assistive Technology in post-secondary institutions
Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- 3+ years professional experience with Assistive Technology in a higher education environment
- Demonstrated experience and competence in Information Technology, to include: Windows and MAC operating systems, productivity software (Office), basic file-server principles and hardware peripherals, such as scanners, webcams, microphones and headsets
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Working knowledge, experience, and comprehensive understanding of Assistive Technology used in higher education, including hardware, software, and practices which allow persons with disabilities equal access and creates the most inclusive learning environment
- Knowledge of American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and federal and state laws which mandate equal access in a post-secondary environment
- Knowledge of effective best practices and current issues in the field of accessibility in higher education, including adaptations and modifications that enable students to access the general education curriculum

Understanding of the legal requirements of ADA and Section 504, including key differences in the provision of reasonable accommodations in the post-secondary academic environment as opposed to the k-12 setting
Excellent writing skills, oral communication skills, and interpersonal skills Ability to represent the university to a variety of constituents
Comprehensive administrative, supervisory, and organizational skills, including ability to work independently and cooperatively as a team member

Student Disability Services in the Division of Student Affairs provides a full range of accommodations and services to over 1,000 students with physical, psychological and learning disabilities, facilitating equal access to the educational process. This is accomplished through direct service support, review of campus accessibility, adaptive technology, assessment, test accommodation, and a variety of other services.
Position Information
The Director of Student Disability Services reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Services and is responsible for the direction, planning, administration, organization and evaluation of the various programs and services offered through SDS in support of the students at San Diego State University. The Director works closely with the Associate Vice President regarding mission, goals and programs, outreach services, staff development, budget, human resources, resource management, assessment, sustainability and overall direction of SDS.
The Director will be responsible for monitoring, understanding and interpreting trends and developments in the field and for flexibility and creatively translating those developments, when appropriate, into departmental policies and procedures. In addition, The Director will work to increase awareness of disability as a facet of diversity and to promote principles of Universal Design and will be responsible to further the integration of disability considerations into the University’s culture, policies and practices.
Student Disability Services hosts a federally funded TRiO Student Support Services program that provides enhanced services intended to increase graduation and retention rates of at-risk undergraduates. The TRiO program employs two full-time and two part-time professional staff. The department also offers a disability-based WorkAbility IV program. This is a cooperative contract between the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), SDSU Career Services and Student Disability Services the purpose of which is to deliver enhanced career services to DOR-eligible students with disabilities. The WorkAbility IV program employs two full-time professional staff and one part-time support staff person.
The Director should be a visionary, innovative, collaborative and student-oriented leader, who is able to communicate well with the SDS staff, SDSU students, faculty, staff, and other constituents with whom interaction is required. The Director should have good leadership and strategic planning skills, the ability to be forward thinking, with knowledge and demonstrable experience in conflict negotiation and/or resolution. The incumbent must also possess diplomacy, tact, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work well with diverse groups to ensure that the services meet the needs of all community members. In addition the Director should possess knowledge and understanding of the principles of organizational sustainability, which is inclusive of budget and human resources. The Director will work to increase awareness of disability as a facet of diversity and to promote principles of Universal Design.
The Director will be supported by an Associate Director, a Learning Disability Coordinator, three Disability Counselors, a Deaf Services Coordinator, an Adaptive Technology/Accessible Media Coordinator, an Administrative Analyst Specialist, a Test Accommodation Coordinator and three support staff, and a team of hourly employees and student assistants.
Evening and weekend work are occasionally part of this position.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in a related field required. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience administering program(s) providing student disability services including the design and/or development of related programs and services, and responsibility for fiscal management, including budget and human resources oversight. A minimum of three of the five years of experience must be in a college/university setting.

The focus of the Neuropsychiatry Research Training Program is to integrate basic
and clinical neuroscience research in a cohesive effort to elucidate neural substrates
of schizophrenia. Converging multidisciplinary approaches by collaborating
laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania aim to contribute a new
understanding of the symptoms, pathophysiology and etiology of schizophrenia.
Research opportunities in animals and humans include the integration of
neurobehavioral measures ‐ cognition, emotion, olfaction ‐ with neuroimaging,
electrophysiological, cellular and molecular neuropathological measures. Genetic
paradigms are pursued in examining endophenotypic markers and relevant

Basic Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Child Development, Cognitive Psychology, School Psychology, or related field.
- At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience advising, teaching, or supporting college students with learning disabilities and ADHD.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate Neuropsychological, Psychoeducational documentation, and/or Individualized Education Plans.
- Strong working knowledge of section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act and all amendments.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree

Qualifications/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A Ph.D. or terminal degree in Disability Studies or a closely related field is required (completed by August 2013). - The Director provides leadership and oversight to the Disability Service Team in the review of documentation, determination of assessing accommodation requests and referral to appropriate offices to develop independent learning skills.
- The Director works with faculty in identifying academic/education barriers and the development of accessible learning opportunities, both in-and-outside of the classroom; serves in a consultative role with faculty, staff and students throughout the University to identify barriers that limit access to programs/services in the residential and ‘virtual’ (electronic) campus; and works with the EEO/ADA Office and University Counsel to identify and clarify legal mandates that support University departments, programs, policies and activities, ensuring equal access to all members of the University community.
