About the Survey
During the 2008 AHEAD Conference plenary “A Call to Action: Preparing to Serve Wounded Warriors,” the need for this survey data was underscored. The intent of this study is to learn what role Disability offices play with wounded warrior’s service provisions. Additionally, the survey seeks to determine what campus services and accommodations are being provided to wounded warriors. It is expected that the results of this survey will provide increased understanding of current practices regarding wounded warriors’ at the post-secondary level.
For the purpose of this study the term “wounded warriors” refers to students enrolled at your institution that served active duty in the Middle East wars, specifically Iraq, Afghanistan or Kuwait (Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom), and who have also self-identified some form of disability and/or need for disability accommodation (whether or not officially recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs as being a service-related disability).
Reinforcing the need for Disability Offices to be more engaged with wounded warriors is a letter written July 25, 2008 by Stephanie J. Monroe, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (OCR), who wrote a Dear Colleague letter stating “Under our new Wounded Warriors Initiative, we will support veterans with disabilities…” She further states “We will also work with institutions and service providers wanting to know how best to support students with disabilities and encourage institutions to adopt innovative approaches to serve this important population.” See the full letter.
