Founded in 1985 as the Alabama Postsecondary Network, the organization was spear-headed by Auburn University Montgomery and the Center for Rehabilitation Resources. By 1988, the network had grown to include 36 members institutions from across the state, hosting annual conferences and publishing a network newsletter.
In 1996, the network became a state-wide organization with by-laws and officers, known as Alabama Association on Higher Education and Disability (AL AHEAD). Past conference speakers have included Loring Brinkerhoff, Salome Heyward, Jane Jarrow, Jeanne Kincaid, and OCR attorneys.
Today, AL AHEAD serves as one of the prominent postsecondary disability services resources in the state of Alabama, seeking to connect professionals across the state and offer premier professional development opportunities.
