Professional Development Opportunities

AHEAD members have had great access to professional development this fall. In addition to the invaluable member support always available through the AHEAD Member Community, AHEAD is currently in the middle of its most successful fall webinar series ever! This is due in large part to the remarkable presenters who shared their expertise: people like Paul Grossman, Jamie Axelrod, Kelly Hermann, Adam Meyer, Scott Lissner, Rhonda Rapp, and other lesser known but equally knowledgeable professionals. While many of the webinars have already been presented, you can still “register” to receive a link to the full recording of any webinar to watch and share with campus colleagues at your convenience. Full details and registration information for the three webinar series offered this fall are available at https://www.ahead.org/events-programming/webinars

And, speaking of webinars:

  • AHEAD’s spring webinars are open for registration now.  They include AHEAD to You webinars on housing, the underrepresentation of students of color in disability service offices, accommodations decision-making, and The Legal Year in Review, offered as a webinar by Paul Grossman for the first time. We’re also looking forward to a series of webinars from AHEAD’s leadership initiative and the 2019 ADA Café from Ohio AHEAD, featuring Scott Lissner.
  • AHEAD is pleased to begin offering free-to-member webinars each month. The first 90 registrants can join us live; the link to the recordings will be made available to the full membership. Look for details soon.

At the end of October, over 100 newer disability service professionals gathered in St. Louis for the first AHEAD Start Academy, a three-day training and networking event dedicated entirely to exploring foundational principles in disability resource work. The opportunity to be with our newer, enthusiastic, inquisitive colleagues and the remarkable presenters was amazing. We look forward to being able to offer the event again next October!

The end of January will bring another onsite AHEAD training: the 13th annual Management Institutes. This year the five in-depth, two-day trainings include:

  • Socially-Just Services: Unpacking How Ableism Shapes the Disability Experience and Informs Professional Practice
  • Disability Law for DSS Directors, Staff, and ADA Officers: Compliance requirements, analytical tools, and solutions
  • An Introduction to Managing Accommodations for Students in Health Science and Professional Education
  • Access in Online Learning: Essential Knowledge for the DS Professional
  • Working with Students with Disabilities in TRiO Programs: An Introduction (Tell your TRiO colleagues!)

All Management Institute programs have filled the last two years. If you’re thinking of meeting us in Tucson, Arizona for the event, please register early. Details are at https://www.ahead.org/events-programming/conferences/2019-management-institutes

AHEAD’s annual conference, Equity and Excellence: Access in Higher Education, will be in Boston in 2019. Planning is well underway. To get the most up-to-date information, join the 2019 Conference Community.

And, finally, let us know what professional development content you need by completing the survey at Professional Development Topics survey.
