AHEAD’s Foundations in Disability Resources Monograph Series Call for Proposals

AHEAD is pleased to announce the continuation of our Foundations in Disability Resources monograph series. This series is designed to focus on practical professional knowledge and information for “newer” professionals in the field of disability resources. We are seeking proposals from professionals interested in developing a monograph to be published in 2022. More information on possible content and focus of this monograph are provided below. All monographs will be:

  • Theory-based, including literature and research references and citations where relevant
  • Practice oriented, conversational in tone, and including many examples
  • Approximately 120-150 pages in length, comprising 4-6 chapters

Proposals for this CFP are due August 15, 2021. Completed manuscripts are due August 15, 2022. Authors will be paid $1,000 for their work, upon completion of the final document.

Timelines for the Project

Deadlines for the project include the following:

  • Deadline for applications:  August 15, 2021
  • Notification of award: September 15, 2021
  • First draft of selected monograph chapters submitted to AHEAD editors: January 15, 2022
  • Editing and complete draft submitted to AHEAD editors: June 1, 2022
  • Final document due: August 15, 2022

Who May Apply

We are seeking applicants who have completed graduate level educational training and have a background and expertise in postsecondary disability. Preference will be given to applicants who have published in the area of postsecondary disability and have expertise and direct experience in working with college students with disabilities.  Doctoral students who are experienced disability resource professionals are welcome to apply.

Scope of Work

AHEAD is interested in proposals that are theory-based and introduce a key element of disability resource office work to new professionals in the field. New professionals are broadly identified as individuals with less than three years of experience in a disability resource office. The proposals will have practical advice and detailed examples of application.

The 2021 Foundations series monographs included the following topics:

  • The Appointment That Can’t Wait: Serving College Students with Concussion in Disability Resources, by Nancy Resendes Chinn, Ed.D.
  • Operationalizing our Commitment to Social Justice: A Guide for Disability Resources Professionals, by Amanda Kraus, Ph. D.
  • A Guide for Assistive Digital Technology Provision to Postsecondary Students, by Jane Berliss-Vincent, A.M.L.S.

Possible focus areas for 2022 include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Disability studies: critical analysis of disability in society, media, design and services and how this relates to the daily practice of disability resource offices
  • Legal concepts: the interactive process, fundamental alteration, undue burden, direct threat, reasonable accommodations; 504, the ADA as amended, case law and settlement agreements
  • The interactive process: student interview, documentation, and decision-making in context
  • Access barrier analysis and accommodation delivery: service design, assistive technology, accommodation coordination, and faculty interactions
  • Outreach and consultation: campus leadership and influence in the instructional, physical, technology, and policy environments
  • Office management: the nuts and bolts of office policies and procedures, record keeping and management, budgets, program evaluation

The final product is considered “work for hire” and will be the intellectual property of AHEAD. It will become part of AHEAD’s monograph publication series. All monographs will include author attribution.

Applications should include the following materials:

  • A cover letter describing why you are interested and what particular qualifications and perspectives you bring to the project.
  • CV or resume of the author(s).
  • One to three relevant examples of the author’s writing (this may be any type of publication including peer reviewed journal articles, research-to-practice briefs, or web page documents).
  • A description of the proposed monograph, which should include:  A title of the monograph; The proposed topic or focus of the monograph; An outline of chapters to be included and a one-two sentence summary of what each chapter would likely cover. Types of examples, cases, or additional resource materials that may be included in specific chapters if relevant.

Please keep in mind that the target audience is new professionals in college disability resource offices.
