Is an Online Class for Me?

Online courses and classes are a convenient and accessible way for working adults to learn new skills and increase knowledge. In the same way that you prepare for in-person courses, workshops or other training opportunities, you need to consider the demands of online learning. Here are a few tips to think about:

  • Treat an online class as you would an in-person class. Remember that you have paid for the class and chosen it to enhance your professional skills. Commit your time and attention as you would for any other class.

  • Manage your time. Allot about 2 – 3 hours per week away from work or other commitments to listen (and maybe re-listen) to lectures, review notes, work on assignments, etc.

  • Note the beginning and end dates of the course and ensure that your schedule allows you to participate and complete the class. This is especially true for classes that are designed around weekly assignments.

  • Find dedicated space to focus. Make sure that you have up-to-date software on your computer to run various features of the class (e.g. browser, a PDF app, Zoom), and a good internet connection.

  • Participate in discussions and group activities. Respond to instructor questions and discussion posts from other students. It helps to make what you are learning “stick.” Apply concepts to your work.

  • AHEAD uses the Blue Sky™ Path LMS™ Learning Management System for its courses. Class sections are arranged into modules with various components such as links, documents, tests and videos, depending on the design of each class. Details about Path LMS™ are included in each course.
